Full Description

A Mail Coach halted in front of a thatched inn, with road weary horses. There are three bays and a chestnut horse and four greys are being led to replace them. In the foreground is a dapple grey mounted by a gentleman who possibly connected with the mail as indicated by his dress and satchel across his body. A winter scene with a terrier to the side of the carriage and dapple grey, There is an ostler in process changing the horses almost centre frame. It is a busy painting, with people in the inn behind the Mail Coach, in the far background on a hill is high steeple church.

Artist profile

Henry Thomas Alken born in London in 1785 and died 1851. A prolific artist of sporting scenes.
