Full description

A wintery scene of a mailcoach. The team have been struggling to pull the laden coach through the snow as the coachman had enlisted two more horses to assist. The nearside leader has fallen and the guard is trying the free the outside trace that has become caught under the fallen horse's leg. Cold looking passengers look on.

Artist profile

Alfred F de Prades (circa 1820-1890) lived and worked in England painting sporting scenes of racehorses, hunting and coaching scenes as well as portraits of dogs. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Art.
